Hmm... Octavia Butler's Dawn and Fledgling... Octavia Butler is the only black female science fiction writer to achieve any significant success and respectability in mainstream science fiction genre. I look up to her as a writer because she places black women as her protagonists and heroines.
I like this place...
I was this (imagine index finger and thumb pushed close together) close to chopping off all my hair. I thought: This is too hard! My locs are going insane! I can cut off my hair and wear braids until my hair grows longer, no biggie! Yes, very close. I even made an appointment with a local barber. Everyone would understand. My mother, who cried when I made the big chop about two years ago, said, "Yes, perhaps that is what you should do..." Before I finalized my decision, I went on this crazy websearch for topics concerning loc maintenance. I watched YouTube clips, read a host of loc websites. And after about two hours of reading and watching, I decided that I was going to keep my locs. Yes, they were in this crazy stage, but they are progressing. So I picked myself up by my "bootstraps" and proceeded to wash and then retwist my hair. I woke up the next day, and looked at my locs in a whole new way.
This website was one of the sites I stumbled upon in my loc-support-finding frenzy. I looked at beautiful black women, showcasing their beautiful hair, read articles about women who were unique and stuck out for all the right reasons, and I decided, that I like this place. Where I am locally, (Providence, R.I. -coughcough-boonies) "Natural" hasn't quite caught on, people don't understand it, and don't understand why I did it, so I like places and people that don't have to question my hair choices. I like places and people that simply understand.
