To educate OUR folks, and the community at-large about the lives, of African Americans and the contributions that they (we) have made to the creation and development of this nation. To get OUR folks to realize that all of us, regardless of complexion, socioeconomic status, gender or sexual orientation is deserving of lovingkindness and respect. To impart a sense of caring and responsibility to OUR young people so that they can make positive and sustainable contributions to our communities and the community at large.
My Job
Mama/Wife/Educator/Writer/Artist
My Hobbies
Reading, reading, reading! Visiting cultural and historic institutions. Enjoying nature, particularly the water. Making arts and crafts projects with my baby.
Inspiration
Too many to mention, but they include: my mom, Nana, Margaret Walker, Zora Neale Hurston...and the countless nameless and faceless women and men who, in doing their good work, have unknowingly lifted me up.
In general, those that speak to the diversity and uniqueness of OUR people. It can range from gangster films to family films. Anything that makes me think critically. The most favorite of all time would have to be "The Wiz." It is the second movie I saw in the theatre (the first was Star Wars) and soon after, my grandmother took me to see an Alvin Ailey performance. Somehow, I connected the two in my four-year old brain.
My Favorite Magazines
Right now, I am into literary magazines: The Sun, Tin House, Mosaic AND women-centered magazines: Bust and Bitch. I also love American Legacy and ColorLines.
Favorite Books
Books that tell OUR stories in a positive, powerful way. Books that teach me about myself and others. Books that inspire me to do and be better. But my most favorite is Jubilee by Margaret Walker.
