Sewing Machine Dialemma!

Greetings Sistah,
I was viewing your blog and I noticed that you were inquiring about the Husqvarna Viking Huskystar C20. I am not familiar with this model, but I sold these machines about 5 years ago. They are known for not having to oil them and the bobbins have an anti-jam proof system. At least that was their claim to fame then. I do own one that I have had for more than 12 years and it is my work horse. I also own a Bernina (embroidery/sewing machine) and a Brother (embroidery/sewing machine). I absolutely love my Bernina for all of the different stitches.
However, what Lisa Shepherd Stewart advised regarding testing driving it would be great. Buying a sewing machine is like buying a car. You have to test drive them to get the right 'feel'. Some machines feel or handle better than others. Only you can determine this. Actually, it would be of great benefit to you to decide what you want to do...ie garment construction; crafts or home decor.
I would advise you to sew on different types of fabrics; cotton, demin, t-shirt knit and silky. Also, ask if the machine shop has serviced the machine recently. And check out wheither the button-hole process is easy or not. That can be a great pain and could possibly hinder your enjoyment of the creative process. Enjoy and let us know what you decided to do.
Peace & Blessings!

Need help pls
Hey Sewing circle,
I kind of lost my sewing mojo with all that has been going on around here but now I am starting to miss my creative outlet. I gave my old sewing machine (25 yo bernina) to my mom because the voltage was for the caribean and it was getting a bit slow due to the transformer and old age.
Now I have about 250 euro's saved for a new machine and I was thinking that buying a good second-hand machine would be better than buying a new one for that price. My preference would be a pfaff or bernina but the second hand kind I can get for that price are hobby machines and I want a sturdy one to last me at least as long as the other one ;-)
I found a second-hand Husqvarna Viking Huskystar C20 with 5 yr guarentee but I have no experience with that brand. I did do an online search and it is highly recommended but still I am a bit apprehensive to buy. Do any of you have experience with this brand? Pls let me know! I really need a creative outlet instead of going mad at nighttime :-( I am extremely short on cash so 250 is a lot of money for me now and really need to spend it wisely!!

Pls share any info you have on this brand and type with me!

Chayil's Machine Shopping
Hey Chayil -
If the machine you are considering has a 5yr warranty, I'm guessing that you are buying from a regular sewing machine dealer. See if you can negotiate for a "test drive" of 2 weeks, or maybe even 30 days, where if you decide it's not for you, you can exchange for another machine, applying all (or most) of your payment to the new one. Even if you only get an overnight trial, you can take it home to see if it fits your needs, the fabrics you sew, etc.
Also be sure you know what is and what is not covered in the warranty and where you would get service if needed. I bought a Viking 500 about 12 years ago and it serves me well. Right now I'm also using an Elna 7200 that I like a lot. Keep us posted!
be well, lisa

Greetings Sisters!
I am so happy that I found this site...I feel the beautiful energy as soon as I log on. Similiar to KP, my grandmother was also the illest seamstress in the land and being a creative spirit I feel as if I must discover new mediums to express myself. So, sewing has been added to the list along with languages. As soon as I am settled (currently living in Barbados as a Fulbright Fellow) I am purchasing a sewing machine, taking a class and going to make all sorts of supa dupa fly pieces...whoohoooo! Thank you to all the beautiful sisters on this site who are sharing your art...it is truly an inspiration...I will join the revolution soon! Ciao Bellas!!!

Yes Lioness...For The Lioness You Know, For The Empress You Love, For The Goddess You Are!
i swear i can sew, but i've never sewn a thing
my grandmother used to sew by sight. you could tell her you wanted this top with this bottom, and she'd make a pattern out of newspaper and voila, she'd blend a garment sew fly, she would have won Project Runway hands down. Her spirit lives in me. I can't pass Joann's without buying several yards of fabric. I don't have a sewing machine, or even a clue as how to make anything with needle and thread, but I believe I'm going to just start sewing one day. Joining the sewing circle confirms it. Thank you for having me and my self challenge is to make a sun dress by summer. Any words of encouragement, send em' my way.
love,
kp
