My first holistic teacher was my grandmother, a share-cropper’s daughter born on the border of Texas and Louisiana in 1904. Hunger for acknowledgement led this capable and intelligent woman to a heart-felt commitment for community, family, a thirty-foot kitchen garden, early morning exercises, and an Afro-Southern spirituality that blended prayer and herbal practices from what she called “the old country.”
