As a natural hair stylist and loctician, the founder of Indigofera, Chanelle Washington knows quite a few tips and techniques when it comes to taking care of and styling natural hair! Currently Indigofera is on a bit of a hiatus, but be sure to check the site often for her re-launch as you will simply LOVE their Silky Souffle with it's glorious lemongrass aroma. It creates a major shine on natural/coarse hair & the Ua Mist is fantastic! Nevertheless, her temporary hiatus does not stop Chanelle from offering up some of her favorite tips and tools for staying "Radiantly Beautiful", which is also her companies tag line! Oh, and be sure to download her latest e-books on hair care and entrepreneurship.
ymib: Could you share some tips/advice on keeping very coarse natural hair moisturized and untangled?
1. Cleanse hair with a detergent free shampoo ~ many natural hair wearer skip this step it is the foundation for softness and manageability.
2. Comb while damp: coarse hair should be cleansed and restored properly then sectioned with a wide tooth comb, next use your fingers to separate into smaller section and comb gently from the tips working down to the root. Keep your hair hydrated as you move forward
3. Hydration and steam treatments: Color treatments and locked hair can become particularly parched with very coarse hair. Visit a salon for a professional steam treatment every 2-3 months, in the summer you can steam more often.
4. Nourish and Hydrate every 2 days. Create chunky twist and rehydrate in two days for a radiant twist out, then try a different look like Bantu Knots or Flat Twists. The idea is to wear styles that are easy, chic and versatile. This allows time for hair care rituals during the week. Don’t wait until your next shampoo or salon visit to nourish your hair.
