For many years, I found washing my natural hair to be a nightmare due to issues with tangles. I would spend what felt like hours yanking small combs through my hair in an effort. This appears to be an issue for many women with highly-textured hair. However, through trial and error, I've found a routine that has made painful wash days a thing of the past. By following a few simple steps, you can change your whole outlook on washing your natural hair. You might even enjoy it!
One of the biggest mistakes many naturals make is attempting to comb the hair while dry with a fine-tooth comb. This is a disaster waiting to happen and can result in unnecessary breakage (and headaches!). Another mistake is allowing the hair to fully shrink during the washing and drying phases. The key steps are to detangle the hair before shampooing, and to keep the hair stretched while washing. Be sure to take your time and exercise patience. If you are in a rush, it's better to wait for another time to wash your hair.
Detangling: It is important to detangle the hair thoroughly before washing and the addition of shampoo can cause the hair to swell and become even more difficult to comb. Section your hair in six to eight braids or twists to keep the air stretched and separated. Saturate your hair with a mix of water and a thick, creamy conditioner. This will soften knots and make the hair pliable, allowing the comb to glide through your hair. You are now going to take a wide-tooth, seamless comb and comb thought the section starting from the bottom and working your way upwards. If you reach a knot, try to separate it from the rest of the hair-you may need a smaller comb to work the knot out. Once a sections is detangled, re-braid it and move on to the next one.
Washing and Conditioning: Wash hair once a week with mild moisturizing shampoo or cleansing cream that won't strip the hair of its natural oils. Wash hair while still sectioned. The purpose of this is to prevent the hair from wrapping around itself and shrinking up, which will undo all your hard work! Add a thick, rich conditioner to your hair in sections. Cover with a plastic cap for 30-60 min. For an extra treat, leave on over night. Rinse out the conditioner.
Drying: Your hair is now detangled and ready to be styled! You do not have to comb through your hair again at this point. Add a creamy moisturizer and allow hair to dry at least 75% in large braids or twists.

Nice post
Nice posting..good info. I love rocking a wash and go during the summer months, it's great. But I always return to good old faithfuls: plaits, twists or some cornrows.
