Little Talks: A Little Chat with the Little One: me: “oh no the wind knocked the chairs over outside again” the little one: “uh oh, I'll fix it” me: “bad wind, I am going to go outside and give the wind a spanking for knocking over our chairs” the little one: “no!!!(he said very abruptly with a sharp look of concern and “how do you think you are going to do that” on his face) you can't do that, that wind is not bad, I'll fix it for him!”
Little Talks: A Little Chat with the Little One: me: “hey did you like the ice-cream that Ba-Ba bought you?” the little one: “yeah”, me: so what kind did you have...chocolate? The little one: no i had blue...like this color(as he points to a big spill of blue ice cream on our carpet)
The little ones will always fill you with laughter!
Fresh: From The Market
Twice a month the little one and I go grocery shopping, usually on Fridays. He always looks forward to going to the market and racking up on snacks and he usually gets a cookie or two or a handful of jelly beans. Anyhow, I always love shopping at the market, the warm lighting, the earthy colors, and aisles filled with lovely packaging. A day of grocery shopping always feels like a field trip for some reason. I guess because I have to go to two separate stores and on some occasions three. Our little voyage usually consists of a very quick trip to the library, to the Fresh Market, and then on to good ol' Kroger. It's funny that while we are out there is always someone who says “oh, no school today” and I always have to say , yeah, we actually are in school...I home-school”. All they see is myself and the little one taking our precious little time walking the aisles with calculator(cause I gotta budget) and list in hand and as I put new items in the cart we practice math, spelling, language, and his colors. Today he decided that he absolutely needed his book-bag on as we shopped. I took a pic(above and below) of some of my favorite items we picked up from the Market today. I tend to taste a little bit of everything after we come home, a pinch of this a pinch of that. The tulips were not on my list nor the French lemonade, but hey, how could you have one without the other...I just love Tulips!
Where do you all do your grocery shopping? Do you make a day out of it? Do you add up your total before getting to the checkout? Are there items on your list that always makes you feel good when you get it? What's a day of grocery shopping like for you?

To market to market!
Haha you're not the only one who feels like the market is a field trip! In the Bay Area our fresh market is Berkeley Bowl. I love going there! There's never any parking, but it's so worth it, because when you walk inside there's every vegetable, fruit and herb imaginable, fresh squeezed oj...it's like a field trip because those are the things that get me excited! All that is to say I can totally relate. Healthy food is thrilling, especially in a world where we're bombarded with the complete opposite.
Market Life
Mawiyah Kai EL-Jamah Bomani
When I lived in New orleans there was Whole Foods Market. I would purchase my organic produce and soy products from there along with snacks. In Shreveport there are several Mom and Pop Markets and Krogers. Coincidentally the Krogers in the upscale white area has a vegetarian market inside. So instead of ordering my Yogi teas I can cruise to that part of town and buy my Yogi. I have four babies(Nzingha 11, Kambui 10, Camara 7, and Naima 6) and so I also know the importance of a budget. So we bulk when possible and for the winter I'm more of a soup creator and fresh juice supplier. I allow the kids to aid me in juice mixing. The kids like choosing several different fruits to go with the carrots or leaks then pushing them down into the juicer. So not only are they being holistically healthy their getting a nourishing meal. I am a fan of a cup of lemon ginger tea. The kids love carob chip cookies. Their Dad Red Hot Blue Chips. We all together love Soy Caramel Brownie Ice Cream. Grocery shopping is the best place for math, language, social studies(the best markets in the white area) and science. We work the whole family also in a community Garden (Sankofa Gardens) and with that work grants us fresh veggies that we grow by hand. That also is a blessing.
Give Thanks for the Little Ones!
I love this! I usually do my shopping on Sundays. Beacause I have three little ones, it is a hard to shop with them unless my husband is with me. Sundays are good because it is a chance for me to focus on getting the food that the fam needs, and I get some 'mommy time'. I usualy plan out the meals for the week and shop based on that. That way I stay within my budget and get everything I need. When I return home, the children act like we won the lottery. Food represents good time in our house. Meal prep is usually accompanied by music, good wine, and a lot of dancing. We love fruit in our house and the children will always help put it away. This is always a good time to incorporate counting apples, pears, and such. I usually make a big bowl of fruit and set it out, so while they are playing they can just take as they please. This cuts down on the "mommy can I have?" questions. Thanks sis, for the post.

Love homeschool!
That sounds like a wonderful way to school your son!
I love the market, we go every saturday to pick up fresh fruits, veggies, fish, flowers and if the boys go to the library I usually go to the fabric stands to sweet the eye or if I am lucky to pick up some fabric. We always end the day with picking up some oatmeal cookies at subway. I add up everything in my head and pay at the stalls. The rest of the grocery shopping I do at the wholesale once a month, I made a pricebook with how much these things cost so while making my grocerylist I already know how much I will spend. Dh or the eldest buy bread and milk after school or work daily.
Those tulips are beautiful I love it when the first tulips appear on the side of the roads!
First sign of spring!

This Post Makes Me Smile
My free time revolves around my weekly trips to the green market, Trader Joe's & Whole Foods.
Grocery shopping, like taking a bath everyday, is extremely cathartic to me, especially because I've become an avid organic/unprocessed/locally-grown food consumer. It keeps me conscious of doing my body and the earth good. It's fun because I love trying new things. I'm glad I love food, I love to indulge in food. It's guilt-free consuming as far as I'm concerned, especially when I know where & from who the food is coming from.
My favorite items to purchase are limeade, fresh scallops, dried cranberries, fresh pesto sauce, loose teas, fresh flowers AND (saving the best for last) Alternative Baking Company's Pumpkin Spice cookies!
I think I may steal your idea about the taking pictures of the goodies I bring home.
Refreshing Prespective...
I've always felt like everything for a child and even us adults can be a chance to learn something new. You have taught me something. Make the most of it!!! Everyday every venture can be an adventure and sometimes routines can be the most valuable time you share with loved ones! Thank you for such an awesome perspective!!!
By the way-- My excursions to the Market haven't been nearly as much fun as yours have been... But they will be from now on.
Whenever you make a move in life, Make it count!!!
