I have signed on to teach a group of girls 10-12 yrs of age about waistbeads. I know about them my main problem is with my clasp closure of the beads. I have been experimentally creating waistbeads for a year now. I have a problem getting the clasps right it breaks or falls off Help somebody please I'm to show these Lil sistas how to make their own string of beads plus relate them to their own wombs and experiences of becoming wombon. Send a sista some help. Laughter through the tears

a little help
Hi there Headstrong! Those clasps can get really agravating...I know. It sounds like you might have the end of the wire to short...you know the shorter piece that is left hanging through the crimp beads at the beginning and end.
Try making that a bit longer, to where at least 3 or 4 or more for extra security can comfortably fit over it and your "actual" beading wire.
If you really want to avoid the whole un-assureness of the lobster clasp, then I would suggest having the girls use toggle endings and instead of wire, give them string or floss to string their beads on. Have them measure their waist and then cut the string accordingly allowing extra length for knotting and clasp...knot the string onto the ring...put a bit of clear nail polish over the knot to help secure it...string as usual, and then knot the other end to the toggle piece. I hope this makes sense. It could be a good alternative to using the clasps, wire, and crimp beads (which sometimes if it is not crimped properly it will not hold the wire and it will slip through and come apart).
Another thing with the wire is to be sure to allow for a bit of stretching, it should have a little slack, because the wire will stretch and if it was to tight, it will break pre-maturely.
Here is a link to all the posts on waistbeads here on ymib that may be of inspiration:

Well, hope this might have helped a little bit. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Thank you
I think I'll try the thread approach with the young sis. Funny thing happen this past Sunday at my Sista circle I brought out my beads and my sista Tif showed me hers. The funny part is that she got them from this site I thing from you. The strand of beads are beautiful I got to see up close the closure and a few extra links tha are added great idea. I've only worked with single strands seeing hers makes me want to try the double strand.
