I've Missed Sharing with You!

Life is about repositioning, refocusing and redirecting ourselves for greater opportunity and insight, which sometimes means taking a step back and being dormant for awhile in order to see more clearly. In the past two months I've taken a step back to assess my focus; I've relocated to the state of Texas; and I'm even more focused on dealing with the emotional side of minority achievement. More importantly, to go back to my first love of helping people overcome their fear of success.

As I've watched the continued events of the presidential race for a democratic nominee, I have been astonished and pissed off over the strong insinuation of racial antipathy and the recreation of an archaic fear that reaches back into the 1915 vault that depicted blacks (specifically, black men) as villains, violent rapists and threats to the social order of America. But amidst the undertones of racial divisiveness is a piercing sound for change--and this has increased my commitment in doing my part in insuring that minorities have a stronger presence in the dynamics of this change.

I love fresh picked herbs!

I absolutely love cooking with fresh herbs so I decided to do some container gardening. Okay so I started off with mint. Then thyme, Italian parsley, chives and rosemary. I figured I'll plant what I like and what I use on a regular basis. My dad who is constantly surrounded by plants has a green thumb of which I inherited. A few years ago while living in a house with a large yard I attempted several times to plant a garden. Oh my what a difficult task! Clay like infertile soil and finding the time to tend to it. I managed to grow tomatoes, bell peppers and a few herbs but nothing spectacular. Last year we moved into a town house which meant no more backyard which is okay because no yard = no yard to maintain. Our new home doesn't have a huge patio but instead a covered entryway that gets perfect sunlight for growing plants. I'm actually enjoy container gardening because it is easy to care for and not as time consuming. I am planning to plant some veggies real soon and big ups to Soulliving for the inspiration!

The Power of No

I'm definitely a "yes" person. I love to give, love to be of service when I can, and over the years I have even done it at the expense of myself, giving more than what I could, and having some of my needs not met as a result. It was actually financial guru Suze Orman who got me to rethink doing this. She was talking about how many women have a problem of giving and giving, and decimating their own energy and resources as a result. She went on to say that that's not truly giving, because you're really just transferring suffering in a way, there is still someone in need, only now that someone is you. She said that true giving is when we can give freely, and when those choices enhance our lives, not bring them down in some way.

So I took a deep breath and ....

I'm OK. lol. I slipped up and forgot who was in control here. For a brief moment I literally lost it. But that serves to remind me of the daily work that is required if I am to truly be. I started a path but I didn't continue it and my emotional tailspin was the result. I've been exercising with my mom for the last two days and really decided to just do the work, trusting that my steps will fall on the predestined path. I'd gotten complacent and overwhelmed. No wonder I felt depressed. Suffocating spaces of life. In order for me to be at peace I must make continuous steps towards my final end. Its true that I've been dealt a few blows...a monumental school bill that must be satisfied before I am allowed to return, an accident that left me without a car since February and limited funds to get it repaired, social responsibilities with pressing financial obligations and the list goes on. You know I think the biggest pressing concern is my living space. Its just not what I want. Its overcrowded with furniture and things. I can't get rid of the furniture just yet because I don't have funds to replace it.

No Black South African designers?

This morning, I decided i wanted to look into fabric design, screenprinting, etc. I ended up on a site, that was filled with lots of info. There, I came across a link to the "South African Designers Guide."

I was so excited to see what this offered, as i know that the South African region has a looong history of rich, vibrant and intricate design.

What i found surprised me! Not only were there no bold, colorful, intricate designs, but NONE of the featured designers were Black. Not one! Now i know that S.A. is a very mixed country, but MOST of the people there are Black, so their exclusion was a bit suspect.

I mean, over the years I’ve seen some absolutely fabulous art and design that has come from South Africa. Some of it was "revolutionary art" that was in direct response to that countries racist history. Some was the celebration of the spirit that permeates oppressed people.

So how, in this guide, was none of that included?

And the comments!!! While there were many people who asked the same question that i am, there were some, that were downright disturbing!

READ THIS LETTER VERY NICE

Subject: FW: An elder responds to statements about Michelle Obama and Jeremiah Wright
This is a good read; whether you support Obama or not. Enjoy!

Greetings All,
This is truly a profound and insightful message from a 78 year old African-American woman! Please read and pass it along. Subject: An elder responds to statements about Michelle Obama and Jeremiah Wright

To my friends and family, I rec'd this letter via one of the Obama grassroots groups and I think it should be circulated to answer some of the silliness that's going on about Michelle Obama's statements and Obama's connection with Jeremiah Wright. Pass it on! (or sit idly and watch it all happen and then complain about the outcome). ========================================================================
To The Editor:

As a 78 year old American of African descent, I feel compelled to respond to all this 'much ado about nothing' when it comes to the statement that Michelle Obama made about the fact that this is the first time in her adult life that she has been proud to be an American.

The country needs to hear this from the Black perspective.

This mess I'm in

writing through it....
So he left and came back. I thought that would be it. I'd know better, he'd know better, we would both just DO BETTER the second time around. I don't know how it got to this point. Am I really that stupid? Do I really crave the presence of a man that much that I am willing to deny reality and quality just to ensure he won't leave. I cannot deny that since he step foot back into my life, things are not the same. I'm trying to make them the same but they just aren't. I do not have the JOY I had. I have good times with him. Really, really good times. I love and cherish our friendship, but my life seems to be crumbling before me. Things just fell into place and now either the puzzle was never put together right the first time or I broke it by forcing a piece in that just didn't fit. Why can't I reconcile this within myself? It cannot be that difficult to leave a man. Can it? I want him, but there are parts of him that just don't mesh well with me or the life I want to lead. My vision is all cloudy now, literally and figuratively. I've got to end this, someway.

Lesson Plan with an emphasis on Persona Poetry and Gourd Decorations

Lesson Title:
RESISTANCE/OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF GOURDS
Examining the History of Slavery in Louisiana through Persona Poetry

Mrs. Mawiyah Kai EL-Jamah Bomani
info@sankofavision.org
Sankofa Vison, Inc. (www.sankofavision.org)

Lesson Overview:
After reading Follow The Drinking Gourd by Jeannette Winter, students will create persona poems and decorate gourds as part of a visual art’s project. Students will be introduced to the conceptual ideology behind persona poetry. These students will acquire a working knowledge of how to construct their own persona poems or dramatic monologues (speaking through the voices of Gourds once owned by slaves) into effective poetic sketches. These student writings will serve to integrate a verbal stimulus that greatly enhances the theatrical impact of their exquisitely crafted Gourd creations.

Running

Yes I've been running. That only occurred to me recently and I've finally decided to accept that. I think there is a part of me truly afraid to release all that is within for fear that I'll be isolated...funny because I feel isolated now. You would think that at this point in my life I'd be past that. I'm 26 years old and afraid of being alone. WOW. What the devil? The idea that my entire reality is bordered by the fear of isolation is painful.

Fruit

We are all fruits of our mother as fruit is to the tree that gives it life, enables it to develop through various stages and finally ripen. In comparison we are conceived, nurtured and at the precise point of development we are brought forth from within our mother’s womb. As a tree passes life sustaining nutrients through stems, similarly a fetus receives vital substances through the umbilical cord. So every time you pluck the stem from an apple, orange or any fruit take a look at the crevice shape that is left behind. Just think you too possess the identical feature except you probably refer to yours as a navel or belly button.

THE AFRICAN WOMAN AS HEROINE
GREAT BLACK WOMEN IN HISTORY
By RUNOKO RASHIDI

DEDICATED TO AFRICAN WOMEN AROUND THE PLANET!

INTRODUCTION: THE GLORY AND MAJESTY OF AFRICAN WOMEN

For many thousands of years the African woman has been
worshipped, revered and idolized by individuals,
families and nations--not only in Africa but around
the world. Ancient records show her as queen, goddess,
scholar, diplomat, scientist, icon, prophet and
freedom fighting warrior exalted with and sometimes
above her father, husband and brothers. The African
woman has administered great and mighty nations, led
determined and capable armies into battle and founded
splendid and enduring royal dynasties. Indeed, no
other human of any racial or ethnic type has been so
widely venerated as has the African woman. This brief
essay, therefore, is intended as a secure African
man's historical recognition, tribute and salute to
the prominence, grandeur and majesty of African women.

In The Beginning

The first African slaves in Louisiana numbered half a dozen these were captured as plunder by French Army Soldiers in the Spanish War of Succession 1710. These Africans in Louisiana were predominately Malinke speaking Bambaras from the western interior of the African continent who provided a cohesive group especially in New Orleans. They were joined by smaller numbers of people from coastal African groups including Wolof and Sereer. It wasn’t until the years 1717-1721 that a growth spurt in the mass importation of African slaves to Louisiana would change the face of Louisiana as a major player in the African Holocaust. At this pivotal moment in history some 2000 Africans were brought to the Louisiana colony. The death toll among Africans in Louisiana was as high as it had been for Native Americans wrought with European diseases such as scurvy, dysentery, respiratory and intestinal flues all of which would dissolve the lives of half the abducted Africans within a few years of their capture.

Happy Womb Acknowledgement Day!

Happy Womb Acknowledgement Day to all of you beautiful sistahs. This is the day to celebrate the true beauty of womanhood. This is the day to celebrate our unique ability to call down spirits and nurture them in our womb. This is the day to celebrate the long hours endured during that spirits transition. This is the day to celebrate Life, Love, Growth...Womanhood, Motherhood. This is the day to thank our children for trusting in us so much that they chose us to guide them through this experience. Motherhood is the most profound journey.
Happy Womb Acknowledgement Day to all of my sistahs, friends, Queens, Goddesses, Healers.....Mothers!

LIFE

When will it ever stop

I had a horrible year (2007) and it has rolled over into 2008. I'm a college educated black woman who has no job, no place to stay (of my own), and no car. Last May I lost my job and had to move home with my family (which is horrible in itself). I've been trying hard to find a job and in Nov of 2007 I found and was hired for a job that was four hours away from where I had a place to stay. However in that city I had a best friend who said I could stay with her until i was able to get aa place for myself. The year was starting to look up then......i came back "home" and told my mother and family that I got the job and ould finally be able to leave and pay bills. ( When you have a job you dread paying bills but when you've been out of work for 7 months paying bills means that you are back on your feet) I was totally excited to find a job. However my mother wasn't she wanted to know where I was going to stay and how I was going to get to work and back everyday. So I told her that i had made arrangements to stay with my BF and she became livid.
