Where is the culture South Florida...?

I have been reading all the amazing blogs on the YMIB sites and hearing about sisters in NYC, the Bay Area and D.C. etc having all these amazing cultural events and inviting each other out and it has me feeling a little left out. There is so much culture in South Florida but, excluding Miami-Dade, you never here about events for us sisters to meet up and show off our creative selves.

I was born and raised in West Palm Beach and I have always found it lacking in the Arts/ entertaiment department for Black women who want more than clubbing. I moved to Miami for college and my whole world was opened up as far as culture, and socializing. There was always something new and exciting to do. I recently moved back to West Palm Beach and its like hoping off a bullet train onto a trolly. There is absolutely nowhere to go if I want to hear a little spoken word, see some soul-moving art, vibe to jazz or just be out and see my people in all there beautiful glory. I feel slighted because West Palm Beach is actually a cultural destination with venues like the Kravitz Center and the Norton Museum of Art but all the events are catered toward everybody else, if you know what I mean.

The Strangest Feeling...being called a nigger

I was walking back to work today coming from lunch and as I was crossing the street. I heard someone yelling behind me. I really didn't pay it no mind but as the person got closer I realized that he was yelling out nigger!

Doctor or Midwife????

Blessings,

I recently joined this amazing community and I must say you all are inspiring me to reach for a better life mentally, physically and spiritually. Finding Ymib could not have come at a better time. About a week ago, I realized I was pregnant. It was unplanned but not a surprise.

I would truly appreciate any suggestions on what I should eat for my baby to develop strong and healthy.

I also would like...no... I NEED to hear your stories about being pregnant. What did you do to stay healthy and sane. I am thinking about going to a midwife instead of a doctor. Have any of you used a midwife?

One of my friends who has two children explained to me that for her first pregnancy she went to a doctor/hospital because she was young and just allowed everyone around her to take control of her pregnancy. The second time around she went to a midwife and did everything on her own terms and she said that it was infinitely better this way.
