Parent's Table

Welcome to Carriacou, W.I. Often people confuse the name with Curacao, however they are two different places. This the place where my father's people call home and, where I am often reminded by family members, my home is as well. I had the opportunity to visit Carriacou in October for the 2nd time in 29 years. The first time I was only 2. I went to participate in the Feast (fete) that was being held for my uncle that died two years prior.

Is Cultural Privacy Unreasonable

Sisters, I need to confer with you.

Today I received some comments, on my video about Afrocentricity. I was telling a story about how a caucasian woman came up to me one day and asked, how could she do the same head wrap that I was wearing. Personally I don't feel like I need to tell her how, so I came up with a line and told the woman that her hair is straight it might slip off or she won't be able to do it the way I've done it. In the video I giggled while telling this story. Anyways, the commenter said I hurt her feelings. She then went on to say the following:

takemetomexico that last remark you made about the white woman wanting to try to wrap her hair... because she wanted to be "culturally aware" .... ok, i can see how you would be a little taken if she just wanted to do it to make a fashion statement and didn't really understand the meaning behind your style. but what about a white woman with curly hair who also wanted to go natural, and move away from straighteners and all that.. is it wrong to take inspiration from african styles? that remark hurt my feelings

Just an Update - Spiritual Roots

I just wanted to let all of the ladies, that gave me reference on what materials to read regarding Afrikan spirituality/religion/tradition, know that I am finishing up Jambalaya : The Natural Woman's Book of Personal Charms and Practical Rituals. I actually learned quite a lot about Vodou as it is/was practiced in New Orleans. Teish's story is quite special.

I also wanted to make mention of one section that talked about Hants. As soon as she gave this description and how to remedy it, I called my mother, who was experiencing similar phenomena. She would awaken and not be able to move and not be able to talk. She would see figures around her when she was in this state. She wouldn't be able to breathe etc. Initially, when this started to happen she called my grandmom and my grandmom told her to put a bible outside her bedroom door. Well needless to say that the bible is still outside the bedroom door and my mom no longer sleeps in her room.

This Village wedding is Inspiration for my own

What really appealed to me was how much the parents/elders were involved in the ceremony. I thought this would be great to incorporate both my parents and maybe even my grandmother in this area and also his parents. I think its important that we get public blessings from both side.

He was a bit put off that there was no "ring ceremony" which I think I wiill incorporate but will be very basic with just words about how we feel about each other. No vows per se.

I'm still working it out in my mind.

And we are definately going to have Afro Caribbean dancers for the reception. He was telling me about this Dominican Popular song that had a dance to it that was the same movements you would find in African dancing. I thought that would be cool.

ANTM- ::SAD FACE::

This is for the ladies that watch America's Next Top Model. First, let me preface my sadness at this season's make overs by saying YAY MARVITA! I am so glad that she came back this season. She was my favorite out of all the girls from last season and was shocked that she didn't get picked for the show. Marvita Photo 1Marvita Photo 2Marvita Photo 3

Herbal Remedies for the men in our Lives

I am looking for advice. I have been reading the blogs regarding taking care of the womb and getting that back to optimal performance. This is important because we are the mothers of creation and if we are not working properly then all things start to break down. But my question is regarding the father's of creation.

My Other has been medically diagnosed with a sperm disorder, the name escapes me, right now. Basically 90% of his sperm moves in a circular motion. The diagnosis is that he will probably not be able to conceive naturally.

Considering Traditional Afrikan Religions

I was first intrigued by Traditional African Religions when i really looked in to what Vodoun (Voodoo) is. The belief system and the ancestor worship are what caught my attention. That was my stepping stone into looking at other Traditional African Religions, like Ifa and Akan and a few others. Primarily I am looking at Ifa.

I grew up as a Muslim, which in America, is kind of an alternate religion. After I stopped going to Islamic school at the age of 10 I really have not practiced the religion, although I've held its core belief systems near and dear.

The Pan-Afrikan Nationalist Manifesto for International Community Empowerment

The Pan-Afrikan Nationalist Manifesto for International Community Empowerment
Thoughts and ideas on how we can better ourselves
by Ayesha F.

I have limited knowledge of a lot of the varying disparities that Afrikan’s across the globe face. However, I do know that Afrikan peoples have suffered, primarily from lack of community and financial stability. Inspired by the book “Black Economics: Solutions for Economic Community Empowerment” by Jawanza Kunjufu; I hope to lay down some fundamentals for all Afrikan communities to consider. I will be using some of Jawanza’s own ideas for community empowerment in this manifesto. I know that some of us would rather read less rather than all at once so for this reason this manifesto will be broken up into “Parts”.
